It is awkward to search for vehicles, then to have to scroll down below the fold in order to view them. Can the location map be removed from the search results page(s)?

Hello,
Yes, of course. You can hide location map for search result page.
You need go to admin area - components VehicleManager : Settings - Frontend Settings - Settings Layout Search Results
and choose Show map
for layout search results: - No
