Doesn't work after changing settings.

Installed twice. First time with Gantry 5 and RocketTheme template. Installed, set initial settings, made a menu item clicked and get this error: syntax error, unexpected 's' (T_STRING)
Can't go back to home page, get same error. Backend, get error when trying to access your component.
Next, a clean install of Joomla 3.8.7 with NO 3rd party template. Installed, set initial settings, made a menu item clicked and get this error: syntax error, unexpected 's' (T_STRING)
Can't go back to home page, get same error. Backend, get error when trying to access your component.
These were both fresh installs with no 3rd party extensions. Yours was first in both cases.
Need this resolved or refund so I can get something that works. Please advise.

Update: Thought the temp URL might be the problem so I used a fresh install of a permanent URL. Made a menu item and get a 404.
So far, I'm not impressed.
