Hi,
after some trial and error, I managed to create drop-down menus for the virtuemart categories.
Now I would like to output the created menus as drop down menus. But no matter what I try, the menu items only appear one below the other. What am I doing wrong?

Please check this is Joomla drop down menus or not depend from:
1. Style and HTML code - which used for create this menu in your joomla template
You may see in You Joomla Menu manager:
{yours site}/administrator/index.php?option=com_menus&view=menus
diffirent menus, Some support Joomla drop down menus some not.

2. This depend from Joomla menu item type, Please check attachment . If this Parent item - it in 99% case will not drop down menu item. Joomla drop down menus items ordinary items which has parent

So, first you need check in Your Joomla template, which menu support drop down menu item and add Menu Item to so menu. Change Joomla template - you may in Joomla template manager. Or you may check our Free Joomla templates
