Is it possible to place the component somewhere in an article.
I noticed it is only possible to refer to the component via a menu-item.

yes you may insert in article some 'real estate' from joomla real estate
We have special plugin for this: Real Estate Manger link in content plugin
for use this plugin you need install it, turn on and add to article text like:
where "12345" is ID some your real estate
Or you may insert any real estate module to any your article - for that you may use joomla load module plugin, and "Insert module" button in article
