The template that I am using does not allow for a sidebar, so none are the available locations are difficult to find (in the header, footer, etc). Is there some way to display the search options within the main component page?

Not full understand what with yours footer and header positions.

Why not add some module position to yours current template ?

Please checke how work Joomla plugin "loadmodule"

Please check ours "BookLibrary Search Plugin for Joomla"
