Hello

is it possible to insert HTML code into the photo description?

In every image in our joomla gallery you may insert HTML description.
For this
- go to administrator->component->gallery
- select your photo gallery for edit
- open it
- select photo - where you need add HTML description
- hover mouse point on it.
- Press on "gear" icons:

This I know, but I have the free version and do not have access to this feature.

Yes, I am sorry, in free version of gallery - you can't add HTML description.
You may add only "Short Description" - but there without HTML
