Im working on site which retails , trucks , autos and Industrial equipment. I would like each vehicle type to be a category e.g Industrial Equipment. Can i create it such a way that i can have the category as a menu item and can this be achieved with the free version of the vehicle manager softwar?

Hello,
You can do that in Vehicle manager free version.
Only for create menu to every category, you need do that with help create joomla menu as "External link" - and set to that link - link to Vehicle manager category.
In Pro version - for that exist alone menu item

Hello,
Possible, add some color or styling to the category table in Vehicle manager, for that best solution install FireBug extension for firefox, with it help you may check where and what need change in CSS for set view exactly as you wish.
If that small - you will need go to code. Vehicle Manager open source - so you simply will can code edit
