Not full clear what you mean "How do you make the frontend work in pro version? "
For see some thing at frontend (vehicles, all vehicles, some categories), you need go to Joomla menu manager and create menu to some item from Vehicle manager

I want my customer to be able to add new cars on the front end of the website. It explains how to do this in the manual, but the manual doesn't match what's actually in the component, and I can't seem to figure out how to do it with what is in fact there.

Hello,
for give possibility to user add new car from frontend in Vehicle manager software
you as admin must in Vehicle Admini setting option "Show button [ Add Vehicle ]:" - set to YES, and select users Group for what you wish add these features
also you may create menu My vehicle in Joomla Manager - where from frontend user may manage self cars
