I have created a footer menu and linked all my menu items to this menu.
Unfortunately in the vehicle booking template the footer menu position is not active.
How can I activate it?

Sorry , I not understand what you mean

1. You need check your Joomla module positions
2.You need in Joomla module manager Create new module for "Joomla menu module", and for this module set in settings show "Footer menu", and position select from point1

The footer module was already pre-installed and a footer menu was already created in the template cck_vehicle_booking package.
However, when I open the preview cck_vehicle_booking in the template system folder then a footer menu position is not shown. I have the footer1, footer2, footer3, footer4 positions, position 13 and debug position only in the lower part of the template.

So please select for you "Footer menu" any joomla position, like " footer1, footer2, footer3, footer4 positions, position 13"

You may add any joomla module to any joomla positions, The position name - only hint - where it located

I set the footer menu to another position. The menu items are listed vertical. How can I list them horizontal?

We need:
Link to your site,
Module name which you try show
and module position where to you try show footer menu. Module position must exist on your site.

For now I not see "footer_menu" module position on your site
